Default Help with Anxiety and Medication?

It started with episodes of back and chest pain sometimes mixed with a light fever (Q1 07), Began to come back during the summer, intensified and this time it included shortness of breath. Visited the Dr, and she believed I had asthma - Prescribed an inhaler...Next Day, I decided to start over, and began a daily regiment of vitamins, minerals, and 5HTP. On day 4 I had a moderate anxiety attack/shortness of breath (I did not know what that was at the time). Day 5 I had deep anxiety and when trying the inhaler for the 1rst time and it didn't work I drove my self to the ER convinced I had lung cancer or similar. All tests were healthy. Quit regiment on day5. I then figure out that I'm having anxiety attacks. Now I no longer feel odd pains but a constant state of mild/moderate pure anxiety several days in the week. Dr gave me lexapro but the reviews are scary! I have not yet taken any.. This is all new to me - I'm tempted to try them but afraid of long term issues. Please help! Thanks!
