Default Congenital heart disease & developmental delay???

My little boy was born with Pulmonary Atresia and underwent surgery at one month of age and again 21months. He is now 2 1/2 and I find that he is slightly delayed in areas of his development such as speech and not walking until 22 months. Has anyone been in a similar circumstance and found their child had some delays or did the do well with their development?

My last daughter was born with two holes in her heart, she was 11 months old before this was discovered.By this time she was under weight ( 7.8 kg), unable to sit on her own, unable to crawl or stand. She was so ill it took 3 months of meds before she was strong enough for the operation.Within a month of the operation she had put on 3 kg and took her first steps. She is now 13 years old, 5' 6" tall, doing well in school, at her dance class and is a picture of health.Your little boy has had a big fight to survive, this takes it's toll, give him time, he's still very young. With time he will catch up, try not to worry.Good luck.

My bestfriend's one year old daughter was also born with a congenital heart disease. The baby has a hole in her heart and one of her major arteries is too narrow, putting lots of pressure on her heart (I don't know the name of this condition). She has gone thru 2 ops in the last 1 year and yes, she is developing very slowly. She is barely sitting up now and has only just started moving a little with her buttocks but it takes so much of her energy. She gets very exhausted very fast. I think she will probably be delayed in development like your son too. Didn't your doctors advice you abt your son's development? I'm not sure, but I think babies wt congenital heart problems do develop slower than normal kids as I've heard from other ppl too. The doctors attending to my friend's kid told her this is normal and to anticipate it. Hope this helps but do definitely talk to your son's doctors if it is normal and on what you can do to help him. Lots of prayers and luck with his development...
