Propecia (finasteride) is one of the few treatments that has shown *some* results in serious studies.
In a 5-year study of men with mild to moderate hair loss, 48% of those treated with Propecia (finasteride 1mg) experienced some regrowth of hair, and 42% had no further loss. Propecia is effective only for as long as it is taken; the hair gained or maintained is lost within 6-12 months of ceasing therapy (Rossi, 2004). In clinical studies, Propecia, like minoxidil, was shown to work on both the crown area and the hairline, but is most successful in the crown area.(1)
In my personal experience as a pharmacist, i'd say that you shouldn't expect any miracles or even major changes, especially around the hairline. "No further loss" is also considered a positive outcome, to give you an idea... If there are any small hair growth, it will take a few months to show... Also, be aware that there are a few but significant reports of sexual side effects (such as erectile dysfonction), in more or less 1% of the patients using finasteride.
That being said, it is currently one of the most popular treatment.
